A taste of Cali in Widefield

Jerry Russell on Andover Drive in Widefield gets a lot of comments on the palm tree garden in his front yard. The steel trees, which vary in height from seven, nine and 12-feet, complete with steel coconuts and frolicking metal monkeys, lend a serene beauty to the neighborhood.
“People are always stopping by just to look or take pictures,” Russell said. “I had one guy say he drove around trying to find the place just to see the trees.”
Russell first saw the trees at a home and garden show, where Designer Palms Inc. showcased them. Representative Wendell Turner helped Russell order them and have them delivered by trailer to Widefield.
Steel palm trees are popular in hot climates like Arizona, California and Florida.
“Real palm trees are messy,” commented Russell. They litter the yard with bark, and the coconuts are dangerous when they fall.” The steel trees remain in perfect shape all year, and since the bases are set in concrete, high winds are not a problem.
The craftsmanship is so detailed, people often take the palms for the real thing.
