Sondra LeMay was received into heaven on Thursday July 31, 2008 after a short stay in Penrose Hospital. She was born in Telluride to Alma and Bill Smith in 1941, although if you asked her she would always say she was born in Gunnison. She was a third generation Gunnison native until 2006 when she moved to Fountain with her husband Larry. Sondra graduated from GHS and attended WSC for 1 year where she majored in party.
She met her husband Larry LeMay in 1960 and they were married in July of 1961. Their daughter Jeri Lynne was born in 1963, followed by Garrett in 1968 and Travis in 1970. Sondra was a beautiful wife, a loving and supportive mother and a wonderful and faithful friend;.The smile and glow on her face made friends of any stranger willing to pass the time and share a hug.
Sondra loved to sew and made wonderful clothes, not only for herself and her family, for anyone that needed something special. An excellent cook and baker, she loved to spend time in her kitchen with friends and family. She was always ready to go dancing, fishing, camping, hiking, or any other adventure that could be dreamed up. Sondra especially loved the rodeo, where she spent many years in the announcer’s stand writing checks and praying that her family would stay out of trouble. Sondra was an avid gardener and her many flowers were as bright as the smile on her face. She was never more proud than when her yard was named “Yard of the week” on 2 separate occasions. Sondra’s whole life was centered around the love she shared with her family, friends, and gardens.
One thing she always forgot to do was complain. Her medical problems looked like a page in an emergency room ledger, but she never let it get her down. She never stopped fighting and was willing to put up with another heart surgery to be able to spend more time with her grandkids. Her Lord called her home before that surgery could be performed.
Sondra was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Survivors include husband Larry, daughter Jeri (Greg) Julian, Manassas, Va., sons Garrett (Christina) and Travis (Tami) of Fountain, Co., brothers Bill (Jan) and Rodney (Diane) Smith. Thirteen grandchildren, one great grand child, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive Sondra.
She will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to have met and known her. A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 on Friday August 8, at the Church of the Good Samaritan, 307 W. Virginia Ave, Gunnison, Co. with a reception immediately following in Babb Hall. Sondra asked in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Oakes Home Trust Fund, 1300 Washington St., Denver, CO 80203.
