LiveWell Fountain News
Where did summer go?
Can you believe that school starts so soon? It seems we just let out and here we are going back again. The good news is LiveWell Fountain is planning to work with Pikes Peak Regional Healthier Schools Initiative for the 2008-2009 school year. This program will support individual schools implementing strategies that can improve student performance and improve staff morale. This program can address healthy school environment, Nutrition Services, family/community involvement, Health & Physical Education, Counseling, psychological and social services, health services, and health promotion for staff. It is up to the individual school to tailor their own needs. We are very excited about this program.
Farmers Markets
Don’t miss the Saturday Market at the First United Methodist Church site at 1003 North Santa Fe Avenue. The time has changed to 10 am – 3 pm. Take a peep at our garden behind the Church. It is doing great due to help from fantastic volunteers. At the Tuesday afternoon City Square Market, on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays we continue to have the taste test of our “healthy recipe of the week”. All previous recipes are available. Come down and learn how to cook fresh veggies from the market.
Community Gardens
We always need volunteers at our garden locations. The weeds are trying to win, but with your help we can defeat them. For volunteer opportunities, call us and we will find you a great fit. Starting on Thursday, August 14th , and continuing each Thursday we will have “weekly weeding sessions”. The time will be from 5p.m. to 6 p.m. If you would like to just come help us out, just show up at our 8201 Fountain Mesa Fire Station #2 garden. We will have our gardeners there to assist and answer any questions about the program. Come out and see what were are growing.
At our “unofficial site” out in front of the George Sumuere building, we have had some theft of produce and a bit of vandalism. This is a project for the entire community, but that is not to say that “you see it, you can pick it.” Please help us with our project to encourage stewardship among others and encourage home gardens. We can do it, so can you!
Community action
This week LiveWell Fountain Staff spent some time with the YMCA teens. We had a great time with the kids. The kids learned how to make healthy alternatives to junk foods by making their own Pico De Gallo, Guacamole, Kiwi Mango Salsa and a lovely Watermelon Ginger punch. We had a great bunch of teens that took home a lesson in preparing foods and nutrition.
I am going to say it again-
Thanks Volunteers! We could not have progress with out you.
