Celebrating a pioneer spirit
that wouldn't let a "little" train explosion keep Fountain from moving forward...
This Saturday, any rumblings around City Hall will hopefully be the Downtown Events Association and city staff setting up for Saturday night’s Main Street Blast dance. If you’ve never attended “The Blast” before, I encourage you to come on out for this family-friendly favorite.
There’s always vendors with food and beverages for sale, face painters, dancing and live entertainment provided by Powder Keg . The little ones always seem to flock to the water Fountain in the City Hall plaza, a great place to be if the high temperatures persist!
For those who might not be aware, this event is named “The Blast” as it is reminiscent of an event from history that forever changed our beloved City of Fountain back in the late 1800s.
Even then, the possibilities for greatness were endless- as Fountain was among a half-dozen cities being considered to become the state’s capitol. But then, tragedy struck, a train car carrying explosive powder became disconnected and rolled down the tracks to Fountain, where a passenger train had just unloaded. When folks realized what was about to happen it was too late- the explosion that followed darn near blew the town off the map, and was said to have stirred people from their sleep as far away as Monument.
Since then, obviously, the hardy folks of yesteryear Fountain rebuilt, showing their pioneer spirit was alive and well, helping that town to get on its way to becoming the bustling city it is today. Hope to see you all at the Blast on Saturday!
