LiveWell Fountain News
Welcome and Congrats!
Welcome new staff member Regina Vasquez to the LiveWell crew. Regina is replacing Sarah Curran, who is expecting twins! Congratulations on the new life paths for all.
First Fruit
At our community garden locations, the first harvest is upon us. The squash and tomatoes are doing great despite our late start. We can always use volunteers for general gardening hands. No experience necessary! The raised beds adopted by community members are doing great. The First United Methodist Church Garden is doing very well. Nice job, folks!
Farmers Markets
There has been a time change at the Saturday Market at the First United Methodist Church site at 1003 North Santa Fe Avenue. The time has changed to 10 am – 3 pm. There are assorted vendors and the fresh veggies are always plentyful.
At the Tuesday afternoon City Square Market, on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays we continue to have the taste test of our “healthy recipe of the week”. All previous recipes are available. Come down and learn how to cook fresh veggies from the market.
Community Action
It has been a busy couple of weeks for the LiveWell staff and volunteers. In cooperation with organization and huge volunteer commitment from the Fusion Church, LiveWell staff worked on several projects with this dynamic group.
The local Fusion Church organized the Power Zone Sports Camp open to the as a free camp open to the entire community. The camp was held at Fountain Creek Regional Park Friday, July 18 through Sunday, July 20. The camp included Soccer & Basketball skills and sportsmanship lessons. LiveWell Fountain Staff assisted with coaching and provided information regarding healthy eating and active living.
Early this year, LiveWell Fountain received a call from a community member that wanted to donate her fruit trees to the project. We investigated the location and found that the fruit trees were very mature and moving them would likely kill them. However, we could not walk away. The lovely lady that asked to donate the trees had been ill, and truly needed help around her home. She had many enormous fallen trees and it was apparent that she was once an avid gardener. We told her we would be back.
Then the Fusion Church came into the picture. Pastor Jake Norman came to us and asked, “What kind of projects could they help this community with?”
We were able to facilitate the meeting of the lovely lady and the Fusion Church did a mini ”extreme makeover” on this lady’s home. The Fusion volunteers worked for several days building a wheelchair ramp, scraping, painting, replacing, planting, carpeting and much more.
The Fusion Church also helped disassemble a greenhouse frame that was donated to the LiveWell Gardens project by local grower Lee Junglen. This was not an easy task, but the crew jumped into action and the frame is now divided and ready for removal to future destinations, reassembly and use. Stay tuned for news on the future of this great project.
Thanks Volunteers! We could not have progress with out you.
