On June 28, 2008 Orvey Jerome Jordahl passed away with his family present at the home he and his wife constructed in Redhill Forest, Colorado, near Fairplay.
Orv was born November 4, 1926 in Rock County, Minnesota to Holden and Anna (Bly) Jordahl. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harold, and a sister Helen. He attended elementary through high school at Luverne, Minnesota where he participated in football, basketball, and track, specializing in the pole vault. In 1943, the day after he graduated from high school, he left for the United States Navy serving on the US Elder, a Net Tender, in the South Pacific during WWII.
In 1947 Orv began his four years at Luther College where he earned a Bachelors Degree in 1951. He was Captain of the football team, Captain of the turning (gymnastics) team, and Captain of the track team. In 1951 he was honored to be chosen as the First Athlete of the Year in the history of Luther College. In 1991 he was inducted into the Luther College Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 1951, Orv began a career in education by teaching two years at Ellendale, MN. He spent the summers in Greeley, CO obtaining his Masters degree in Educational Administration. During his time in Greeley he met his wife, Ardis (Hoffman) Jordahl while waterskiing on Lake Loveland. Both obtained their Masters Degree in 1957.
Orv began teaching at Fountain High School, later being the principal of Fountain Elementary School. As his career in education progressed, he was principal of Fountain- Ft. Carson High School where he walked out the school building on his hands at the end of each year. Orv became the Assistant Superintendent of School District #8 and retired from the district in 1987 after 33 years, again upon his retirement walking on his hands out the door of the administrative building. He was very honored to have Jordahl Elementary School in Fountain named after him in 1987. He said many times, “If you put the children first, you can’t make a wrong decision.”
Upon his retirement Orv and Ardis began building a house near Fairplay, later named Jordahlsgrend, after the ancestral home in Norway. They enjoyed being in their mountain home for 6 months of the year, and being in their winter home, in Henderson, NV for the remainder of the year. It gave them an opportunity to spend time with each granddaughter.
Orv is survived by his wife Ardis, a daughter Judy and granddaughter Jacy, a son Jeff and granddaughter Macy. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces, in addition to many dear friends.
