“Summer’s Hottest Ticket”
Rodeo, Thunder in the Valley, Main Street Blast Dance, it must be July. Which means it is County Fair time. This year’s theme “Summer’s Hottest Ticket” is based on the shows and competition, but it looks like the weather could make that true in more ways than one.
General Admission ticket prices are $7.00 for adult, $5.00 if you have 55 years of experience under your belt or $3.00 if less than 12. If your schedule is a little flexible you can beat that, Tuesday the 22nd kids under 12 get a dollar off, Wed. the 23rd everyone gets in for one dollar, Friday the 25th is Senior Day with admission for only $3.00 and Saturday the 26th is American Heroes Day with everyone in the party getting a dollar off if you are accompanied by a Military Member, Law Enforcement, or Fire Fighter.
Everything from serious 4-H competitions to Dress Your Potato is back, this year’s arena events include Bull Riding, Sprint Car Racing, Kids Rodeo, and the ever popular Demolition Derby to close out the fair. The Gold Canyon Gun Fighters will be at the fair with several shows daily, and while the members come from around the county I know several who live here in the Fountain Valley. Another source of pride for us here in Fountain Valley is this year’s Fair Queen, Caitlin Kern. Caitlin grew up and lives here in Security. The Fair Queen competition is based on poise, public speaking, community involvement as well as horsemanship. Caitlin is a member of the “Pikes Peak Rangerettes” and a recent graduate of Widefield High School.
Since 2005 when the fair was tasked with being self supporting, sponsorship became a key part of the planning for the fair and congratulations to the fair board and staff that not only met their goal but with a final push exceeded it about 2 weeks ago. There is a non-profit organization, the RDA, which operates the beer dock and sponsors the races throughout the season with those proceeds going to upgrade the facilities. Those types of partnerships allow the county to keep putting on a quality fair year after year.
By the way, the midway will be back in its old location this year, not every change works as well as planned and we try to only keep those that are crowd pleasers.
