Verna Schaefer
Verna Christine Schaefer, 79, passed away on May 28, 2007.

Chris grew up in Idaho and South Dakota where she attended nursing school. After working in several hospitals and doctor’s offices, she married Harvey Schaefer in June, 1950.

Chris is survived by her husband, two sons, Matthew and Morris; daughter-in-laws, Jane and Elizabeth; four grandchildren, Lisa, Rachel, Leslie and Luke; one greatgrandson, Brian; a brother, George; and sister-in-law, Ava from Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.

Until recent years, she had been active in her church and volunteering at Security Public Library.

Chris and Harvey had also worked for a number of years with the Wycliffe Bible Translators in Catalina, AZ and Laborers for Christ.

In addition to these activities, Chris was an unpublished author, writing several manuscripts, and she enjoyed quilting.

A memorial service was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on June 1, 2007. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Pikes Peak Hospice.

Kevin Shackelford
Kevin L. Shackelford, 41, of Fountain passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2007 of a massive heart attack.

He was born October 2, 1965 in Rockford, IL to Darrell and Jeannette Shackelford.

On December 7, 1985, Kevin married Pauline Abernathy in Rockford. They were blessed with two children.

Kevin retired from the US Army on June 1, 2006. During his twenty years of active duty he was stationed to Ft. Benning~GA, Ft. Drum~NY, Ft. Carson~CO, Ft. Richardson~AK, Ft. Wainwright~AK, Camp Red Cloud~Korea and Balad, Iraq. He also spent some time in the Honduras, Thailand, California, Arizona, Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas and Kuwait.

Since he retired he has been self-employed as the owner of Shackelford’s Maintenance Company and enjoyed buying and selling homes.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline; his children, Hunter and Haley; parents, Darrell and Jeannette Shackelford; sisters, Jequetta (and Greg) Surufka and Renee (and Dave) Johnson; his brother, Nathan (Shayne) Shackelford; as well as many other extended family members.

Memorial services will be Sat., June 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Soldiers Memorial Chapel, Ft. Carson.

Barbara Stevens
Barbara Jean Stevens of Widefield passed away on June 1, 2007 after battling cancer for 18 months.

She was born July 4, 1936 in Breckenridge, Texas to Joe Morris and Dorothy (Johnson) McAfee.

She married Richard G. Stevens on September 25, 1959 in Colorado Springs.

Barbara and Richard opened Security Florist on July 1, 1967. Their children, Chuck and Carole, were fixtures at the shop as they grew up and later worked for their parents. When Barbara and Richard retired from the day to day chores of the business, the kids took over and still run the shop today. Barbara was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church and was a member of the World Flower Council.

She is survived by her husband, Richard “Dick” Stevens; her son, Charles E. “Chuck” Stevens; her daughter, Carole B. (and Kevin) Jackson; and grandchildren, Steffani Jackson and Kyle Jackson, all of Widefield, Colorado; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services are planned Tuesday, June 12, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Ave., in Colo. Spgs., with Reverend Sandy Johnson officiating. Inurnment will be in the church Columbarium. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to FUMC Music Department, 420N. Linda Gauvin
Linda Lou Gauvin, a resident of Security since 1977, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2007.

Linda was a retired Para Educator from Jordahl in Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 and a homemaker. She was a proud recipient of a CU. certificate in Behavioral Management who loved ceramics, crocheting and creative crafting.

Linda was born July 29, 1947 in New London Wisconsin to Vernon and Viola (Zieball) Wheeler. She married the love of her life, Yvan L. Gauvin in August 1979. Together they raised four daughters: Carole, Sylvie, Sally and Kory.

Linda is survived by her husband, Yvan; her daughters, Carole (and Dave) Hines, Sylvie (and Lawrence) Cimino, Sally (and Allan) Minnehan and Kory (and Corey) Andersen; nine grandchildren, Tony, Carlos, CJ, Dalton, Elise, Nicholas, Jenny, Sissy and Taylor; her sister, Lois (and Richard) Bretl; her brother, Mike Wheeler; several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a niece, Tina Marie; her sisters, Pat and Karen; and her brother, Dewey.

Visitation and Rosary were May 30. Funeral services were May 31, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 331 Main Street, Security. Buria followed at Fairview Cemetery, Fountain.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Isaias A. Quintana
Isaias A. Quintana, a Colorado Springs resident since 1978, passed away unexpectedly on May 29, 2007.

He was born April 10, 1931 in San Pablo, CO to Bernadino and Amada (Martinez) Quintana.

He married Anna Hupp on July 16, 1962 in Germany.

Isaias served in the US Army for over thirty years. While on active duty he earned the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 9 Bronze Service Stars, Bronze Star with 4th Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Army Commendation Medal with 4th Oak Leaf Cluster for heroism, Meritorious Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal with 9th award, two Purple Hearts for wounds received in action in Vietnam and the Legion of Merit for service overseas and stateside.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; his brother, Benino Quintana of Alamosa; sisters, Clory Medina of Fresno, CA, Bertha Martinez of Denver, Nellie Schwankee of Livingston, Montana, Lucinda Martinez of San Francisco, CO and Erina Quintana of Livingston, Montana; and several nieces, nephews and their families.

Memorial services took place on Monday, June 4, at Dove-Witt Fountain Valley Chapel, 6630 S. Hwy 85/87, Fountain.

Robert E. Salladay
SSGT Robert E. Salladay, a Widefield resident, age 72 years old, passed away on May 27, 2007.

Robert was retired from the army military police. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his father, John; mother, Alice; and two brothers, Don and Lee.

Robert is survived by his wife, Edna; sons, Robert (and his wife, Theresa) and Dallas; and a grandson, Brian; as well as two brothers, Bill and John and a sister, Gail.

Cremation has taken place. No services will be held.
