Smokers: Please dispose of your butts properly

In response to a request from a local reader, Iíd like to take this opportunity to remind smokers who are ìout and aboutî to please dispose of your cigarette butts properly.

A carelessly tossed cigarette butt is all it takes to start a fire - be it thrown out a car window or discarded along a sidewalk or street.

One of the recent fires in the county may have been started by such carelessness. All it takes is a spark, especially when the weather is so hot and dry.

So folks, please be respective of your neighbors and our community, and properly dispose of these and any other items that are ìhotî or burning (like ashes in the barbecue grills at local parks or in your own backyard.)

A little bit of prevention can go along way toward keeping everyone safe- even in your own home!
