With Memorial Day, Mothers Day and Fathers Day behind us, it is definitely summer, even if the calendar says we have to wait a few more days. Most kids have been out of school since late May and have settled into their summer routine. I am not sure what that is but the first week or so you see more of them on the streets at all hours. By now even the ìtotally freeî have developed some pattern to their days.
Summer at the county is typically when Budget and Finance get caught up on the projects they set aside while closing out the previous year and get it sent to the auditors. Parks is in their peak season with irrigation, mowing and maintenance. Other than Widefield Park the only irrigating they do on a regular basis are the playing fields, and we may see a little less of that this year. With some consolidation being planned, we may see the name go from Parks and Leisure Services to Parks and Environment, looks like a good merger to me.
The folks at the Department of Transportation are getting in some overtime. For several years they have been working 10 hour day 4 day work weeks in the summer, so Friday work allows some crews to get more done on those temperature sensitive projects like concrete pouring and crack sealing. The road and bridge mill levy at least gives us a base line to do maintenance with, and the Rural Transportation Authority money is providing some much needed overlays. Business at the Department of Human Services may not change much in the summer season, but they have been preparing for additional work due to the Democratic National Convention. It is kind of a long explanation but the short version is that it has to do with the potential protesters not the participants.
Of course, the Election Department at the Clerk and Recorders Office is getting busier by the day and that will last until after the November election. The Treasurer and Assessor have peak periods unrelated to the warmer days, and it seems the Coroner is busy year around. All three have seen their work load increase as a function of a county that has grown by over 100 thousand since I have been here. Using my in-box as a barometer for the commissioners, summer shows no signs of letting up as the meetings overlap. I find myself missing neighborhood meetings and even annual functions because the day-timer was double-booked. No complaints here, I just feel bad that I could not make a meeting on an issue that was important enough that all the neighbors got together to work on it.
Itís a little dry and my lawn needs some extra care but we have had great summer weather, hope you enjoy your summer also.
