DMV, Fishing and the Relay
* The Department of Motor Vehicles will now be open 5 days a week at all three locations. The Clerk and Recorder decided that, due to the upcoming election season, all the offices and the functions they perform will be available Monday through Friday 8 to 5. Since the primary reason for going to four 10 hour days was to save money on utilities, I had to ask the obvious ìwhat can you get done in 5 eight hour days that you canít get done in 4 ten hour daysî. The answer had to do with overtime. It seems over time gets a little overwhelming when you start adding extra hours to the four tens. Elections always require overtime. Itís not just the candidates that put in extra hours during the campaign season. With elections in August and November the elections department has been gearing up for some time, in fact, the Commissioners approved the purchase of the ballots for the August 12th primary last Monday. The 4 day work week was saving money on utilities and will continue to do so for Treasurer, Assessor, and Commissioners as we are all housed in the same building. Each elected official has the option to participate or not, and like the Sheriff and DA, the Clerk has determined that in order to fulfill the statutory duties of his office he will need a 5 day week to spread out the overtime.
* While I did make the Grand Re-opening of the Ponds last year after being up all night at the American Cancer Societyís annual Fountain Valley Relay for Life, this year I succumbed to sleep and missed the Fishing Derby but I heard it was a great success with somewhere between 150 and 200 kids participating. The Department of Wildlife has reinstated the Ponds to their Fishing is Fun Program, so they are being stocked on a regular basis and the two docks (paid for by Schlage Lock) should be installed soon. The Relay was a great event again this year, with lots of new friends to mix in with the regulars. The money raised at the Relay goes to cancer research and support services for local cancer patients.
El Paso County and the Fountain Valley may not be perfect, but with events like the Relay and the Derby you know there are a lot caring folks here dedicated to making it better, not just for themselves but for the future.
