Derbys and Relays
As Grand Openings go, this Saturday’s 9 a.m. ceremony for the Willow Springs Ponds will be fairly short. After all, we have a fishing derby to get to. Several merchants have donated sporting goods as prizes for the derby and volunteers from local fishing clubs will be assisting. The derby is open to kids up to 16 years.
This is also the Department of Wildlife’s free fishing day so no fishing license is needed for adults either. This would be a good time to dust off the old poles and see if fishing is a much fun as it used to be before you commit to buying that license.
We are expecting a lot of fish to be caught that weekend, with everything from hatchery raised Trout and Bass to the big old Cat’s, Carp and some semi-native Bass over 2 feet long. I am convinced the overgrown goldfish in the smaller pond are too finicky to eat what is being offered with a line attached.
The 10th Calvary Buffalo Soldiers will be presenting the colors and for the non-anglers, horses ridden by men in full military uniform from an earlier era is always fun to watch. We may also find their bedrolls hide a completely modern collapsible fishing pole.
Backing up about 16 hours, registration for the American Cancer Society’s Fountain Valley Relay for Life begins at 5 p.m. at the Mesa Ridge High School track. The survivor dinner begins at 5:30 p.m., Opening Ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. and the survivor lap at 7 p.m. From that point on someone from each of the 20-some teams will be on the track for the next 12 hours. Of course there will be food and fun to keep the energy levels up and trophies at 7:01 Saturday morning before we head home for some power naps.
If my eyes are little bloodshot at the Willow Springs Ponds Grand Opening I will be able to produce plenty of witnesses that I spent the night raising money for cancer research, not just out raising cain.
