Business seminar for women is June 6
Jim Boudreau and Chuck Larson of Edward Jones and Oppenheimer Funds are hosting a free financial workshop designed especially for women at 6 p.m. Wed., June 6, at the Fountain Valley Senior Center, 5725 Southmoor Dr., Fountain.

“No matter where you are, this Oppenheimer Funds Women and Investing Make It Happen! workshop may help propel you even further toward realizing your own financial success and the future you really want,” Boudreau said.

Good Shepherd United Methodist Church news
“Returning to the Holy Land” is the theme for Vacation Bible School at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Security.
Kids from three years old to 6th grade are welcome June 18-22. See the big welcoming sign at Main and Leta. Registration is being held. Call the church at 392-5782 for more information.

Sunday, June 3, following the 9 a.m. traditional worship service, a Spring Picnic will be held at the church.
“We provide burgers and hot dogs and plenty of side dishes will be available. All are welcome. Come visit with your neighbors,” a spokesperson said.

A “Guatemalan Dinner” will be held on Friday, June 8, at 6 p.m. to celebrate mission work of both Good Shepherd and Sunrise United Methodist. The dinner will help provide the funds for materials and tools for the work mission team going from both churches. The dinner will be at Woodmen Campus of Sunrise UMC. All are welcome. Inner Light, a women’s group at Good Shepherd will meet on Tuesday, June 5, for study and fellowship. The hostess is Elizabeth Stead.

“Quiet Disciples” of our Children’s Ministries honored in May were Louise Fitzgerald and Vickie Vergo.

Memorial Day Sunday honored all veterans and those who died in the service of their country. A special poem was read by Fred Kautz. Red Geraniums decorated the sanctuary in honor of Pentecost.

Rev. Barlow’s sermon topic for both the REAL LIFE service on Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3 will be “The Salt of the Earth” based on Matthew 5: 13-16.
Fellowship follows both services.
Holy Communion will be celebrated.

Weather is a Factor in Baseball Season
As the spring and summer rains fall upon the fields at Metcalfe Park, parents and coaches are urged to call the trailer to get up-to-date status of game dates/times and field conditions. President Dale Terrell is always timely in getting information out via e-mail and a message on the trailer telephone – 382-7227. All baseball patrons are reminded to park in the most southern parking lots away from The Riding and Roping Club area. Your visits to the concessions stand are greatly appreciated also!!

Fun Fishing Derby is Saturday
The grand re-opening of the Willow Springs Fishing Ponds at Fountain Creek Regional Park is planned this Sat., June 2, at 9 a.m. The ponds are located adjacent to Highway 16 and Interstate 25, and is accessible from Hwy. 85/87. The celebration will include a fishing derby for children up to 16 years old, and since this is during Colorado’s free fishing days, no license or fee is required for anglers of any age
There will also be fishing demonstrations, giveaways, fun prizes, and activities around the ponds that are made possible by the following sponsors: El Paso County Parks & Leisure Services, Colorado Division of Wildlife, 10th Calvary Buffalo Soldiers, Outlaw Live Bait and Tackle, and Sportsman’s Warehouse.
“I am pleased that we were able to reopen one of the most popular fishing holes in southern Colorado. Since the ponds re-opened for fishing in April, I have seen some big fish being pulled out. I encourage all of our anglers to attend the grand reopening on June 2 so they too can catch a great fish, and maybe even win a prize,” said Dennis Hisey, chair of the Board of County Commissioners.

7th Annual Relay for Life is this weekend
The Fountain Valley’s 7th Annual Relay for Life, an overnight event that will benefit the American Cancer Society will take place Friday-Saturday. Participants are hoping to raise more than $40,000 to fund American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient support programs.
Events during the Relay include the survivor’s dinner at 5:30 p.m. a special opening ceremony at 7 p.m., the Luminaria ceremony at 9:30 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m. The full schedule is as follows: Camp site set up at the Mesa Ridge High School Track can begin at 4 p.m., Registration for the Survivor Dinner will begin at 5 p.m.
At 7:15 p.m.- Survivors will make the opening lap. From 7:30-8:30 p.m. there will be an “Old-west style gunfighters show, followed by live music. At 9:30 o,n, the Luminaria Ceremony begins followed by fireworks at 10 p.m. A DJ will entertain from 10:15 p.m. until 5 a.m. Pizza will be available at midnight and breakfast will be from 5-6 a.m. with a closing ceremony following at 6:30 a.m.
Relay for Life is an overnight event, involving teams of 8 to 15 people walking or running around a track to raise money to fight cancer.

The luminaria bags can be decorated, and bear the names of indivduals- either in memory of loved one who lost his or her fight with cancer, or in honor of someone who has been touched by cancer, a survivor.

Craft vendors wanted for Farmers Markets
The Fountain Downtown Events Association will start hosting its Farmers Markets on Tuesday nights from 4-8 p.m. in front of Fountain City Hall beginning on June 12.

Craft vendors are being sought to add to the variety of offerings. Space fee is $10 per week. For more information call 237-5181.

Summer programs at Security Library
Security Public Library’s Teen Summer Reading Program, “You Never Know” is underway. Every Monday at 1 p.m., (starting June 4), will be teen activity day.

Also, every Wednesday at 1 p.m., (starting June 6), will be teen movie day. Movies for June are Holes, Agent Cody Banks 2, National Treasure, Scooby Doo 2.

Christian Cowboy Camp taking place
Pick up your Bible, hitch up the wagon and gather family, friends, and neighbors. Read out to attend the 52nd annual Cowboy Camp Meeting. Daily services are held for children, youth, adults and combined gronps led by evangelists, local pastors, musicians and teachers. Three square meals are cooked over hot coals each day in cast iron kettles. All meals are served chuck wagon style under a covered pavilion. Restroom and shower facilities are nearby. If the weather permits, a campfire concludes the day with all gathered around for singing and lighthearted entertainment.
The camp is located 17 miles east of Kiowa, north of State HWY 86. Signs directing to the camp grounds will be found as one gets into the area described. The camp will take place from June 13-17.

The Retired Enlisted Association hosts fun day
A day of summer fun for all ages is planned for Sun., June 10 from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sponsored by The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) Chapter 113 of Fountain, the event will include door prizes, a magician / balloon artist, music, a DJ and more.

“Join in an easy and fun way to learn what TREA is all about and what it can and is doing for you“ a spokesperson said.

Pantry to host Bag Day event on Saturday
God’s Pantry, 102 N. Main St., Fountain, is holding a Bag Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Everything that can fit into a bag will be $5 per bag. Large items will be half price.
There will be goody bags for the first 20 people.
“Stop by and see what all the excitement is about,” a spokesperson said.

Iris show in June to be open to all gardeners
The Elmohr Iris Society Show is planned Sat., June 9, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Hillside Community Center, 925 S. Institute in Colorado Springs. Admission is free.

Bike and Trails Festival is Sat. in Colo. Spgs.
A Bike and Trails Festival is planned this Sat., June 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the America the Beautiful Park in Colorado Springs.

There will be a Dedciated Kids’ Zone with games, face painting and more. There will be chances to win prizes at the Bike rodeo, a kids’ bike parade, helmet fittings and give aways, carnvial games and a chance to win a new book.

WHS Class of 1982 to have 25th reunion
The Widefield High School Class of 1982 will have its 25th Year Reunion July 27-29.

Events will include a Friday night mixer open to all Widefield graduates from 6-11 p.m. Cost $20 per person. Saturday there will be a dinner and dancing from 6:30 p.m. - midnight. Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be Family Bowling at Sjoerd DeRubis’s Bowling Alley Price for Friday and Saturday is $75 per person.

Cancer survivors’ event planned this Sunday
A National Cancer Survivors Day event is planned on Sun., June 3 from noon to 3 p.m. at Bear Creek Regional Park in Colo. Spgs., (at corner of 21st St. and Argus- in Paviliions #1 and 3 which are wheelchair accessible.)

The event will include a barbeque lunch, music provided by The Dulcimer Group, door prizes and the program speaker will be Connie Smith, Suzy Komen Award Winner. There will be games and fun for kids of all ages.

Class on how to make dairy delights offered
The Colorado State University (CSU) Cooperative Extension will celebrate National Dairy Month this June with a class about making homemade ice cream and yogurt. It will be on Tuesday, June 5 from 6-8 p.m. at the Extension Office, 305 South Union Boulevard. The cost is $10 and pre-registration is required.
