Michael D. Downing
MAY 23, 1988 - MAY 2, 2007
Michael D. Downing began his life with the Lord on May 2, 2007 after a life inspiring battle with Cancer.
He is survived by his parents Tom and Lacene Downing, his sister Ashley; and his grandparents Lee and Bonnie Stuart and Robert and Joanne Williams.
Michael was born in Littleton Stony England. He came to Fountain Colorado when his family was transferred with the United States Air Force.
Michael had the privilege of attending Jordahl Elementary, Fountain Middle School and Fountain-Fort Carson High School. Michael was a proud Trojan football player, and member of the high school track and wrestling teams. Michael was awarded a varsity letter in football shortly after he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in December of 2003. Michael’s passion was playing football under the Friday night lights.
Michael was an honor roll student at Fountain-Fort Carson High School and went on to receive a five year full ride scholarship to UCCS from the Kane Family Scholarship fund. Michael was named to the Mayors Top One Hundred Teens in Colorado Springs.
Michael’s courageous battle with cancer was an inspiration to many people who lived in the Colorado Springs and Fountain area. His friends, classmates, teachers and coaches shared in his daily journey that included the normal trials and tribulations of adolescence and high school. The manner in which he faced his opponent - cancer was inspiring and humbling. His spirit, and his determination were contagious leaving no one untouched by his prideful attitude and undeterred strength. He lived each day fully, and left a legacy of love and faith.
A Celebration of Michael’s Life was held Tues., May 8, at Woodmen Valley Chapel, Colorado Springs. A candlelight vigil was held Fri., May 4, at Metcalfe Park in Fountain. The vigil was organized by junior Cara Jorgensen and senior Noel Gugliotta.
In lieu of flowers persons are encouraged to make a donation to: Michael Downing Scholarship Fund Bank Of Broadmoor acct#10414697 155 Lake Ave Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906. The Downings will use that money to award a scholorship every year to a deserving Fountain-Fort Carson High School student.
Arrangements were handled by Shrine of Rememberance, Colorado Springs.
Antonio Lizama
June 6, 1931 - April 27, 2007
Antonio Lizama 75, a 38-year resident of the Security/Widefield area, passed away April 27, 2007 at his home, surrounded by his family.
Antonio proudly served his country for 22 years in the US Army. He served in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He served as a Radar and Communications Specialist during his active years in the military.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maria; one son, Michael, and four daughters, Theresa Hall, Cecilia Sellers, Barbara DeHart, Patricia Bailey; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service took place at Holy Family Catholic Church in Security on May 2.
Visitation was at Dove Witt Family Mortuary in Fountain.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Pikes Peak Hospice. Arrangements are being handled by Dove Witt Family Mortuary.
Arnold E. Maki
DECEMBER 20, 1928 - APRIL 28, 2007
Arnold E. Maki (“Arnie”) 78, died April 28, 2007 at home in Security, Colorado.
He was born December 20, 1928 in Eveleth, Minnesota to August and Martha (Heikkila) Maki.
Arnold graduated from Eveleth Junior College and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a licensed private pilot and he enjoyed flying and watching ice hockey, especially Colorado College and the Colorado Avalanche.
Arnold married Ann Marie Miroslavich on June 7, 1952 in Eveleth. They moved to Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota where he worked at Erie Mining Company and LTV in heavy equipment maintenance. Upon moving to Colorado, Arnold worked for The Resource Exchange in transportation.
Arnold is survived by his wife, his sons Curtis (and Merrilee) Maki of Lacey, Washington, and Brent Maki of Security; his daughter, Corinne Maki of Salt Lake City, Utah; a brother, Ray (and Margie) Johnson and sister, Carol (and Ellery) Rintala, both of Minnesota. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Theresa (and Tom) Flora of Lacey, Washington; Craig (and Angie) of Olympia, Washington; and Caroline Maki and Nyala Maki, both of Lacey, Washington. He is also survived by his great grandchildren Branndon Maki, Ashley Maki, Alexis Maki, Hunter Maki and Iain Flora, all of Washington State.
Arnold was prededed in death by his parents, a brother, Clyde Johnson and sisters, Pearl Tassi and Delores McClellan.
Services will be held at a later date in Minnesota.
