OPINION
Flowers for Mother's Day

With Mother’s Day here, surely it must be spring. The grass has been green for a while but it seems like the trees and flowers are running behind schedule. Of course, that may just be my schedule, I tend to be a little impatient when it comes to spring. The outdoors coming to life again, leaves on the trees, bulbs sending up green shoots, colorful blooms, those are good things after a brown (and white) winter. Human intervention may be to blame at the old homestead for a late appearing spring, we never seem to get bulbs planted in the fall for those spring blooms, the lilac next to the house was planted where the neighbors can enjoy the blooms but we can’t see them. We also had to replace some trees recently and it seems the little guys lag behind their larger brethren for a few years until they get established.

It is time for the annual fertilizer reminder, use less on the lawn and it takes less water to have a green lawn (less mowing too). Same goes for raising the lawn mower a notch or so, the longer grass provides shade for the roots so less water is lost to evaporation. If you are trying for a putting green get professional help, there is a lot of soil prep before you are ready for seed.

You can dispose of your tree branches and yard clippings every Saturday at Rocky Top Resources at 1755 E. Las Vegas St. for a donation of a canned food item that they pass on to Care and Share. The more toxic solid waste like old fertilizer, paint and pesticides go to the Solid Waste Recycling Center by the Department of Transportation facility. Same place it has always been, off of North Marksheffel, but they have changed the access so you now come to the front of the facility at 3275 Akers Drive, a new road that runs between Constitution Ave. and North Carefree.

They also recycle electronics so now you can get rid of the old Atari or the IBM computer that worked when you put it under the stairs but won’t run a single program on the market today. Nothing has changed on the funding, it is free to the users and Solid Waste is still completely financed by tipping fees paid by trash disposal companies when they use a landfill. Feel free to call for an appointment or directions 520-7878.

Maybe spring is about on track after all. Mothers Day always means flowers for the pots in front of the house, followed by a few bedding plants to fill holes in the other flowerbeds. Some people have done well with tomato plants interspersed among the roses, maybe that’s the way to go this year.
