“Let’s Cut Out Cancer”
That’s the theme of a cut-a-thon to benefit the Rock ‘n’ Rollers Relay Team which is participating in the Fountain Valley Relay For Life.

The cut-a-thon will be held Sun., May 6, at Family Hair Care, 30 Widefield Blvd. The minimum donation is $10 per haircut.

There will be a bake sale and lunch will be available.

The Relay For Life benefits the American Cancer Society. The event will be held June 2-3 at the Mesa Ridge High School track.

CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS
Gideon Baptist Church news

Gideon Baptist Church invites everyone to a Rummage sale at the church, 1320 C & S Rd. in Fountain, this Sat., May 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“There will be lots of good used items for sale as well as a few new items too,” a spokesperson said. “All proceeds will go to the church.”

All are invited to visit Gideon Baptist Church. Sunday school starts at 10 a.m. every Sunday morning with Worship services at 11 a.m. Children’s Church for youth five years old through 5th grade is also available.

The Ladies Bible Study meets every Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. Anyone is welcome.

Good Shepherd United Methodist Church news
The annual “Daughter-Daughter” Spring Luncheon at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church will be this Sat., May 5, at 11 a.m. at the church at Leta and Main in Security. Members and guests will hear a program by “Our Own Interesting Women” given by Lena DeRubis, Olga Hines, Irene Lambert, Sadie Rickard and Gwen Cooper. Please bring a salad to share.

The last day of Sunday School will be May 20 and all children and teachers were honored at a Tea Party on April 29. Special honors went to Louise Fitzgerald and Vicki Vergo for their assistance to the children’s program.

Be sure to put June 18-22 on the summer calendar for all children to come to VBS which will be “The Return to the Holy Land”. Brenda Ledeboer and Lee Woosley will again be directors with the help of many volunteers.

Members of the United Methodist Women who attended the Spiritual Retreat at Estes Park were Mary Ann Tabor, Beverly Weinert, Joyce Pederson, Pat Sherwood, Shirley Greener, Beth Cornmesser, Stella Bowers, Shirley Cihak, and Amanda Cribbett.

Plan to attend worship services at Good Shepherd this weekend. Real Life Worship is at 6 p.m. on Saturday and Traditional services are at 9 a. m. on Sunday. Rev. Tom Barlow’s sermon topic will be “The Headwaters of Peace” with the key scripture from Numbers 6:24-26. Both services include special music, children’s church, and are followed by fellowship time.

Baseball Begins in Metcalfe Park
Weather permitted games to be played this past week and all day Saturday at Metcalfe Park in Fountain. The pre-season games will continue according to the printed schedule unless changes are made through president Dale Terrell by calling 382-7227 (trailer) or 382-7649 (home). Volunteers are still needed to ensure the success of our baseball program. Please contact Rose Terrell if you would like to volunteer. Anyone who would like to help in the concessions stand should call or come down. If you missed the training you still can volunteer. Dottie, Birgit, or Rose will train you OJT. Revenue from the concessions stand pays for the umpire fees. PLEASE HELP OUT!!

Chamber golf tourney is seeking sponsors and participant registrations
The 3rd Annual Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament will be held Mon., May 14, at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Course on Fort Carson.

Registration will be at 7 a.m. with an 8 a.m. shotgun start (scramble rules.)

The entry fee is $100 for an individual golf and $350 for a foursome. The entry fee includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, continental breakfast, range balls, door prizes, lunch and awards recognition.

“Non golfers are welcome to join us for lunch and the awards presentation immediately following the 18 holes of golf (around noon),” a spokesperson said. “The cost is $15 and reservations are required.”

If it rains or snows, the tournament will be held on May 21. The event is usually held at Appletree Golf Course, but that course is closed for renovations.

James Madison Charter Academy to hold first annual fundraising carnival Saturday
Come soak in the Cinco de Mayo atmosphere. Play games for all ages. Win prizes. Bid on unique items in the silent auction. Enjoy food and fun for the entire family. The event is free to the public with minimal prices for games, food and soft drinks.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday at Metcalfe Park in Fountain.

JMCA is a free (no tuition) public K-8 charter school in Widefield District 3. The school is now enrolling grades K – 7 for the 2007-08 school year. For information log onto the website at www.jmcacolorado.org or call (719) 391-3977.

Reception for District 3’s top official is May 10
Widefield School District 3 will host an appreciation reception for Superintendent Mark Hatchell, Thursday, May 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Administration Building Board Room. Refreshments will be served. Dr. Hatchell has served Widefield School District 3 for the past 15 years in several capacities, including assistant principal, principal, executive director of curriculum and instruction, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He has been District 3 superintendent for the past six years.

On July 1, Dr. Hatchell will assume the duties of superintendent of Academy School District 20.

Fountain Fall Festival
The plans for the 38th annual Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival are progressing.

Aquila, with the Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce, will be the sponsors for this year’s event, to be held on Labor Day, September 3.

The theme for this year is “Fiesta in the Valley.” Frank Montoya has been selected as the parade’s Grand Marshal.

Entry forms for the parade and a booth in the park were mailed May 1. Additional information and new forms can be obtained at the FVCC Office, 114 N. Main or at the Fountain Valley News Office, 120 E. Ohio.

Fountain Museum will be open May 5
The Fountain Valley Museum will be open 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sat. May 5at 114 N. Main St. in Fountain. The museum accepts any historical items anyone would like to give or loan to the museum. The museum will be open every Sat. until Oct. 2007. They will set up tours for anyone interested.

Craft fair May 5
The Mesa Ridge High School Student Cabinet will hold a craft fair 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., May 5 at the high school. There will be games, food and activities. Proceeds will go to next years activities and assemblies. More vendors are welcome.

Shadow Riders have garage sale
The Cheyenne Mountain Shadow Riders will host a multi-group garage sale Sat., May 5 at 907 Candlestar Loop South in Countryside.

There will be western stuff, tack and much more.

Dinner at FFCHS to benefit teacher’s child
Fountain-Fort Carson High School’s National Honor Society will host a fund-raising “black and white” semi-formal dinner to help out one of their own; gym teacher Sarah Brockberg. The benefit dinner raise vital funds to assist Ms. Brockberg and her child, Kyra, who was diganosed with Muscular Dystrophy. This is currently an untreatable disease and claims the lives of many children still in their infancy.

The benefit dinner is set to take place on May 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Fountain-Fort Carson High School. The dinner choice consists of Veggie Lasagna, Lasagna, or Teriyaki Chicken; all include dessert and beverages.

Two “extremely talented” pianists will provide entertainment. Tickets are on sale at Fountain-Fort Carson High School or through members of the National Honor Society. Prices are $15 dollars for students with any student ID through their high school, and $20 for adults. All proceeds will be donated to Ms. Brockberg to help meet some of Kyra’s medical bills.

God’s Pantry has Shop Night
God’s Pantry, 102 N. Main St, Fountain, is holding its monthly Shop Night from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday. Goody bags will be given out. Donations are always welcome.

Shop Night is held the first Thursday of each month and the store is open late. For information, call 382-0643.

Special Education Advisory Council announces next meeting
Parents, community members and school staff are invited to attend the next meeting of the Fountain-Fort Carson School District Eight Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC). The council has been responsible for creating the Special Education Parent Handbook, the monthly SEAC Newsletter, organization of parent/educator trainings, and advisement to the Director of Special Programs.

The meeting will be Wed., May 16, from 9-11 a.m. at Carson Middle School, 6200 Prussman Drive, Fort Carson.

Representatives from Colorado Springs Park, Recreation & Cultural Services, Fort Carson Child & Youth Services, and the Fort Carson Exceptional Family Member Program will provide information about summer programs and services available through their organizations.
