Kudos to City Manager for realizing “perception” of citizens and transparency in government is crucial

City moving forward with “official” formation of Police Advisory Committee

While attending last week’s Fountain City Council meeting I was pleased to hear City Manager Scott Trainor stress the fact that “perception” is everything as he discussed a recent “closed-door” meeting of what was to be an unofficial Police Advisory Committee, selected and organized by Fountain Police Chief Charles Crawford.

You may remember I wrote about this subject a couple weeks ago.  Had the meeting been organized in a random, unofficial manner of the chief simply asking some citizens for their input, (as he said it was intended to be) that would have been one thing. But the way in which the “General Order for the Police Advisory Committee” was written and when compared with formation of other citizens’ advisory committees, still leads me to question the properness and legality of it all. After hearing the city attorney’s “opinion” at the council meeting (that it was a legal meeting), I had to wonder if he had reviewed all related documents and/or spoken to those in attendance (regarding it being a closed-door meeting)?

Alas… good things are coming about from this ordeal...

Our new city manager realizes (like our mayor) the importance of “perception” as well as the vital need for transparency in government, and is making sure that the issue will be resolved in an official capacity- thereby relieving the concerns of many! Formation of an official Police Advisory Committee will be discussed at the city council’s meeting next Tuesday, so I would highly encourage anyone with input or seeking more information on the committee to attend…

Kudos to our city manager for dealing with this faux-pas. It is assuring to know he values our citizens’ perceptions of the actions and choices made by taxpayer-funded city administrators or staffers!

In doing so, he’s earned a good deal of confidence from “we the people” for seeing that this will be done “right,” (even if that “rightness” is only in the eyes- or perception- of we concerned citizens!)
