New Chair is the Old Chair

Dennis HiseyThe January 31st Board of County Commissioners meeting saw us back at full force when Amy Lathen was sworn in as the new commissioner from District 2. Immediately following the swearing in the commissioners held their “Organizational Meeting”. Normally held earlier in January, it had been delayed until we had all five commissioners present to participate.

At the organizational meeting we tend to take care of housekeeping measures like rule changes, procedural issues and even meeting times and dates. The past few years had seen several changes, but this year saw almost none, including Chair and Vice-Chair. The commissioners saw fit to give me a second year as Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. I suspect some of them figured they had enough invested in me they wanted to see if I could get it right this time around.

Jesting aside, it is an honor to be elected by your peers as Chair, and even more so when it happens a second consecutive year, following a year as Vice-Chair. Often the chair is the spokesman for the County, hence my current over exposure in the media. By virtue of the position the chair also sits on several community boards and commissions as well as being the liaison to the County Attorney and County Administrator. In that role this past year I discovered you tend to have their ear and they yours, so the Chair is more involved in formulating the path to be taken in carrying out the will of the board.

As we are now into the second month of my fourth year as your county commissioner I want to express my gratitude, as I did the very first month for allowing me the use of your office and to sit behind your desk. The phone number is still 520-6414 and, since most meetings, functions and events happen outside of the office, the recording now gives my cell number, and feel free to use email. dennishisey@elpasoco.com I continue to look forward to meeting the challenges ahead of us.
