Kudos to candidates who stayed on high road…
By Managing Editor Patricia St. Louis
To those of you who chose not to attend the Chamber's “Meet the Candidate” event last Friday evening, I hope its because you have already decided who to vote for- based on informed reasoning.
The event, which featured 100% attendance from Fountain's Mayor/City Council candidates as well as District Eight's School Board candidates, was most informative, allowing voters the opportunity to hear and meet the candidates. What really impressed me was how all of the candidates (minus what I considered to be a cheap shot attempt by mayoral candidate Darell Craighead) “stayed on the high road...” which I consider to be a direct reflection of those candidates' sincerity and genuine interest in (and willingness to) truly make a positive difference in our community.
Its been nice to have the near-absence of mud-slinging, but I still urge one and all to stay cautious as the election nears- especially if you haven't determined who you wil vote for. Be wary of anything that seems questionable. You can always call the candidates in question, City Hall or even our News office. Check the facts BEFORE you vote.
Also, some readers have mentioned receving a puzzling recorded message from candidate Craighead that says something to the effect of ‘you may not be able to vote- or that El Paso County may be trying to disenfranchise you.' Check with El Paso County 's Election office at 575-VOTE (575-8683) to follow up. Some who received this recorded message have told me they are qualified, registered voters and at least one household got the call AFTER they had already received their ballots and voted! Remember, when in doubt- check it out
